THE NESS | Learning to Live With the Weather

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the Scandinavian approach to outdoor living.

Having travelled through Denmark, Sweden and Norway, I’ve been struck by how much outdoor activity is woven into everyday life. Walking, cycling, swimming and spending time in nature aren’t necessarily special occasions. They’re simply part of living.

In Norway, there’s even a word for it. Friluftsliv, meaning open-air living.

I mentioned my admiration for this lifestyle to someone recently.

Their response was that Scandinavia has a different climate. Northern Ireland is wetter.

And it got me thinking.

Why should the weather make such a difference?

Yes, Denmark is generally drier than Northern Ireland. But parts of Norway receive considerably more rainfall than we do, and Scandinavian winters can be significantly colder.

Yet outdoor living remains an important part of their culture.

Perhaps the difference isn’t the weather. Perhaps it’s our relationship with it.

We’ve become accustomed to waiting for good weather before venturing outside. We check the forecast, see rain and reconsider our plans.

But what exactly are we waiting for?

Northern Ireland has a relatively mild climate, beautiful coastlines, forests, beaches and countryside that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Of course, Scandinavia has invested in cycling infrastructure, public swimming facilities and accessible outdoor spaces. Their surroundings often make outdoor living easier.

But there’s also something we can change ourselves.

Our attitude.

Today, at the end of October, I walked along the coast, rolled up my trousers and paddled in the sea.

The sun was breaking through the clouds, the water was cold and it felt wonderful.

No special occasion. No elaborate plans. Just enjoying what’s on my doorstep.

I don’t want to spend the coming years waiting for perfect conditions to enjoy life outdoors.

Because perhaps we don’t need better weather.

We just need a better relationship with the weather we have.

No day like today.
