Review: Annie

There’s something about Annie that makes it almost impossible not to smile. The familiar songs, larger-than-life characters and an enduring message of optimism have made it a musical theatre favourite.

And now it’s back at Belfast’s Grand Opera House.

Set in New York during the Great Depression, Annie follows a young orphan determined to find her parents, taking audiences on a journey filled with humour, heart and some of musical theatre’s most recognisable songs.

For me, the standout performance was undoubtedly Claire Sweeney as Miss Hannigan.

Sweeney is brilliant in the role, bringing wonderful comic timing, personality and theatrical flair to the orphanage’s wonderfully dreadful matron.

She makes Miss Hannigan a character you almost look forward to seeing again, despite her questionable approach to childcare.

Alex Bourne takes on the role of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, whose growing affection for Annie provides much of the story’s emotional heart.

And, of course, there’s Sandy, Annie’s faithful four-legged companion, who brings another layer of charm to the stage.

One element I wasn’t entirely convinced by was the staging.

Director Nikolai Foster describes the jigsaw-inspired set as a metaphor for Annie’s journey as she attempts to piece together her life. It’s an interesting idea, although visually I wasn’t completely sold on the concept.

Nevertheless, Annie remains a musical with plenty to offer beyond its familiar songs.

Beneath the colourful characters and Broadway spectacle is a story about poverty, childhood, identity and the importance of finding somewhere to belong.

And perhaps that’s why it continues to resonate with audiences.

Then there’s the young cast, who are mesmerising to watch as they sing and dance their way through the performance. Their energy, enthusiasm and talent are a huge part of what makes this production so enjoyable.

Ultimately, this is a heartwarming production that’s difficult not to love, elevated by a wonderfully charismatic Claire Sweeney and an impressive young cast.

Annie runs at the Grand Opera House, Belfast, until Saturday 31 October 2026.
