Belfast’s award-winning science and discovery centre, W5 has announced their first in a new series of Big Weekend events. Running across three days in May, this event centres around an ImagineNation theme that celebrates the creativity and skill of local cosplayers.
From 19-21 May, immerse yourself into the world of cosplay with a ‘Big Weekend’ of events, workshops, competitions and much more.
Cosplay involves dressing as your favourite character whilst also replicating make-up, mannerisms, catchphrases and even interactions with other cosplayers. They become the character.
Throughout the weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to meet some of their favourite heroes, villains and princesses, be inspired with a series of talks from professionals, take part in papercraft activities and get involved in a cosplay costume competition.
Visitors will also be some of the first to experience W5’s new summer event – Dragons. Are you brave enough to come face-to-face with a dragon? Get ready to meet Dracignis, just one of the mythical creatures that will descend upon W5 this July.
With all this, plus over 250 fun-filled exhibits that excite and inspire, W5’s Big ImagineNation Weekend is sure to be one to remember.

Friday 19 May sees the Big Weekend kick off with the return of W5’s over-18 event, W5 Late. At W5, fun has no age limit but for one night only in May, the science and discovery centre is opening its doors after-hours and grown-ups are given the run of the place.
Centred around the ImagineNation theme, adults can enjoy a night of cosplay with meet and greets from some of their favourite characters, enjoy talks from top professionals in the industry and lots more. Unleash your inner child and explore over 250 hands-on exhibits with no kids in sight. Will you scale the heights of Climbit? Try your hand at TV production? Walk through the Vortex? A fully licensed bar will also be available on the night to quench your thirst after an evening of discovery.

Be immersed in the world of cosplay on Saturday 20 May with a series of talks from some of the top industry professionals. Alongside these talks, wee kids, big kids and everyone in between can marvel at cosplay characters, battle it out in a costume competition, test their papercraft skills and create their own dragon mask before coming face-to-face with one of W5’s very own mythical creatures.
A big day of family fun on Sunday 21 May concludes the Big Weekend. Along with an array of activities, visitors can also enjoy a special cosplay musical theatre event – The Tale of the Frozen Heart which takes place at 12:30pm and 2:30pm.
