Belfast has been named a European City of Sport for 2026

Belfast has been named a European City of Sport for 2026, following a visit from ACES judges who praised the city’s strong sporting heritage, community passion and major investment in facilities.

Belfast City Council, alongside leisure partner GLL and local sports organisations, showcased how a decade of investment has boosted participation and improved health outcomes. Since 2015, £105 million has gone into upgrading leisure centres, expanding programmes, and improving access to sport, with adult participation rising to 50% in 2023/24.

Judges also highlighted projects such as Belfast Bikes, new greenways, upgraded pitches, community hubs and health-focused schemes like the free 12-week Healthwise programme. Annual funding of £320,000 supports clubs and athletes, with initiatives like the Belfast Sports Awards and GLL Sports Foundation further strengthening grassroots and elite sport.

Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly said the title recognises everyone who supports sport across the city and presents a chance to showcase Belfast’s wide range of activities — from football and Gaelic games to emerging sports like parkour and basketball.

In 2026, residents can expect special events, try-it sessions, coach development opportunities and major sporting fixtures across the city. A full programme will be released in January 2026.
