Sheila the Elephant’s festive comeback

Pubgoers in Belfast were treated to an unexpected festive surprise as a life-size replica of the legendary elephant Sheila returned to Commercial Court outside The Duke of York, The Dark Horse and Harp Bar on Wednesday 3 December.

Created by local prop makers The Elephant Men, Sheila is inspired by the true wartime story of a baby elephant sheltered by a Belfast zookeeper during the Blitz. First unveiled in September, her playful appearance, complete with water-squirting trunk and comic antics, quickly became a hit.

For her winter comeback, Sheila sported a furry festive look as artificial snow transformed the street. Crowds gathered to enjoy bubbles, laughter and surprise performances from The Causeway Shantymen and Spark! Worldbeaters.

Her return also celebrates a new neon installation on Commercial Court, commissioned by Willie and Joanne Jack and created by Sign Craft and Sort Design. Featuring a bright yellow outline of Sheila and the message “LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER,” the artwork honours the elephant’s story of kindness and community.

Willie Jack said the project aims to bring joy, animation and a timely reminder to look out for one another during the busy festive season. More surprise pop-up performances are planned in the weeks ahead.
