There was plenty of pink on stage at the Grand Opera House this week as Legally Blonde arrived in Belfast. Many audience members also wore pink, adding to the sense of fun and positivity before the show had even begun.
With a largely female audience filling the theatre, the production fully embraced its themes. While the musical delivers plenty of comedy, catchy songs and energetic choreography, at its heart it is about confidence, determination and believing in yourself.
At the centre of it all is Amber Davies as Elle Woods, and she is quite the revelation.
Amber completely owns the stage, bringing warmth, humour and charisma to every scene. Rather than simply recreating a familiar character, she makes the role her own, capturing Elle’s optimism, resilience and unwavering belief that you should never let other people’s expectations define who you are.
It’s a performance that holds the production together from beginning to end.
The supporting cast match that energy, creating a production full of personality and pace. The choreography is slick, the ensemble never loses momentum and the musical numbers are delivered with infectious enthusiasm.
Legally Blonde continues to resonate because of what it says about believing in yourself. It’s about proving people wrong, finding your own voice and having the confidence to pursue your ambitions, even when others doubt you, or perhaps you doubt yourself a little. The recurring feeling throughout the evening is simple: be who you want to be. You have 100% got this. It’s a message we can all relate to.
That positivity clearly connected with the Belfast audience, who responded warmly throughout and rewarded the cast with a well deserved standing ovation.
