The Sound Of Music at Belfast Cathedral

The Sound Of Music at Belfast Cathedral

Celebrating 60 years of this iconic musical, with a 20 piece orchestra, a stunning cast of 40, The Sound of Music by Belfast Operatic Company is everything you want it to be. The setting in Belfast Cathedral is beautiful, it’s perfect for the music, it’s atmospheric and enchanting.

The production running all this week marks a momentous double celebration, as BOC commemorates 65 years of amateur theatre excellence in Northern Ireland, while also pays tribute to the 60th anniversary of The Sound of Music.

This is an immersive production in Belfast Cathedral from the moment you arrive and throughout the night as the cast interact with and share the floor with the audience. Expect superb vocals, heart-warming storytelling, and an unforgettable score including “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and “My Favourite Things”.

The staging is mostly white with minimal decor and a lot of coloured lighting to portray various settings. It’s amazing also how large swathes of white material can be used to create the backdrop of many different scenes. The simplicity works perfectly in the surroundings of the cathedral.

As always with Belfast Operatic, as a company they are superb, and having such beautiful vocalists accompanied with a 20 piece orchestra in this super location felt special.

It’s a long show at almost 3 hours, much like the actual movie, but what a superb night of music from Belfast Operatic Company. It’s a truly special experience in the perfect location.
