A new festive play by Leesa Harker at Theatre At The Mill sees 3 couples overcome their personal baggage to embrace love and bring us some festive joy.
Belfast Actually started off for us with that old chestnut of a local storyline of different sides of the community and a, we can’t possibly fall in love because we believe in different things, attitude. I just wanted them to get over it and accept they clearly had the hots for each other and get on with living and loving. And they did. They found a way and it was a beautiful thing actually.
For another couple, both dealing with grief after the loss of a partner, and guilt that they couldn’t possibly fall in love again.
Then the 3rd couple, Gareth the country singer searching for fame and his agent Minnie.. who just wants him to want her, but he is focussed on other things.
It’s almost painful to watch them all and you just want to shake them. Whoever said love was easy.
Belfast Actually is packed full of fun one liners and local references. There’s a lot of great singing, fab music, fun and festive cheer in amongst the love dramas of these 3 couples. Do they get together? Well would it be a Christmas full of joy if they didn’t?
I think the audience fell in love with them all, there were a lot of ooh’s and aah’s, and a few tearful moments as love blossomed. What’s not to love about seeing love, actually.
Belfast Actually runs until 30 December.
