New Dog Play Area Opens at Ormeau Park

A new dedicated dog play area has opened in Ormeau Park, offering a secure space for dogs and their owners in one of Belfast’s busiest green spaces.

Located close to the Indoor Tennis Centre and Ozone Complex, the enclosed facility includes agility-style play features, seating for owners, a water supply and two separate areas designed for small dogs and for medium to larger breeds. Some of the equipment has been repurposed from older playground apparatus, adapted specifically for dogs.

The project has been funded through the Concert Social Levy scheme, which reinvests income generated from major events in Belfast’s parks back into local communities.

The opening comes alongside a renewed council campaign aimed at addressing dog fouling across the city. Under the “Take the Lead – Bag It, Bin It!” initiative, additional dog warden patrols are being deployed in identified hotspot areas, and awareness messaging is being rolled out through street cleansing vehicles and council staff.

Dog fouling remains an offence, with fixed penalty notices issued to those who fail to clean up after their pets. Residents are encouraged to report persistent issues through the council’s website to support targeted enforcement.

For many regular park users, however, the immediate change is more straightforward. Ormeau Park now has a dedicated space where dogs can exercise safely off-lead, while owners have somewhere designed specifically for them.

In a city where green space matters, small additions like this often make a noticeable difference to everyday life.
