Belfast’s iconic umbrella canopy has officially returned to Commercial Court, reappearing in a refreshed and expanded form.
Now stretching twice the length of the original installation, the colourful display once again hangs above the cobbled street outside the Duke of York, bringing a familiar burst of colour back to the Cathedral Quarter.
The updated canopy features 42 umbrellas, finished to better withstand the Belfast weather, alongside over 500 metres of colour changing lighting that will shift the atmosphere from day into night. For St Patrick’s Day, the installation has already turned green, adding to the city’s seasonal celebrations.
At street level, hanging baskets filled with red polyanthus introduce an added layer of colour, marking the return of spring as visitors begin to fill the city again.
A new neon piece titled ‘Rainbow’s End’, paired with a gold bench, has also been introduced at the end of the lane, offering another small moment of charm in one of Belfast’s most photographed streets.
For many, the umbrellas’ return is simple but welcome. A familiar sight, restored just in time for brighter days ahead.
