Power, Protest and Rebellion: Animal Farm at the MAC

A striking new adaptation of Animal Farm will make its world premiere in Belfast this February, bringing fresh urgency to George Orwell’s iconic work. Produced by the UK Theatre Award–winning Tinderbox Theatre Company, the production runs at the MAC from 18–28 February 2026.

Supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, this marks the first time Animal Farm has been staged in Belfast in more than 25 years. Directed by Patrick J O’Reilly, the production reimagines Orwell’s political satire as a sharp, contemporary response to protest, power and resistance.

The cast—Jo Donnelly, Catriona McFeely, Clare McMahon and Susan Hoffmann—play four women detained following a protest in Belfast. Refusing to answer their interrogators directly, they instead speak through Orwell’s text. As tension builds, the interrogation room fractures and Animal Farm is brought vividly to life—fuelled by wit, anger and rebellion.

Patrick J O’Reilly describes the production as “more than a play—it’s an event,” adding that Orwell’s work remains a powerful lens through which to examine power, corruption and the right to protest today.
