Hot cross buns return to shelves across Belfast every spring, spanning supermarket aisles and local bakery counters. They include a mix of large scale production and smaller Northern Ireland suppliers.
A significant share of buns sold locally are produced by Hovis at its South Belfast bakery, supplying Lidl stores across the region. The partnership, worth around £7 million annually, highlights the scale of local production feeding directly into supermarket shelves.
Alongside this, Genesis Crafty offers a more bakery style product within supermarkets, with a softer texture and more pronounced spice. Heatherlea Bakery and Knotts bakery represent a smaller scale approach, supplying buns that feel closer to traditional bakery output.
At the premium end, Marks and Spencer focuses on fruit heavy and many enriched and unique variations, while Kingsmill continues to supply our local Spar network amongst others.
Across Belfast and the wider region, hot cross buns remain a seasonal staple shaped by both local production and national brands.
